Armenia marks United Nations Day

Today the world celebrates the 64th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations. Convened and constituted at the immediate aftermath of the Second World War the UN declared as its objective the following objectives: maintaining international peace and security, developing friendly relations among nations, and promoting social progress, better living standards, and human rights.

The organization has, over the years, taken effective action on a wide range of issues and has served as a forum for its 192 member states to express their views, through the General Assembly, the Security Council, the Economic and Social Council, and other bodies and committees.

Note that the Republic of Armenia joined the UN on March 2, 1992.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon sent message congratulating UN Day. Delivering his message Ban Ki-Moon called for all nations to unite as one to face the great challenges that the world faces today.

“On this United Nations Day and every day the UN is at work – for people, for the planet, for jobs, for youth. People everywhere are looking at United Nations to the deal on climate change, to keep the peace, to stand up for human rights. We are making good progress, including at sessions of General Assembly. But I’m also sorry of the distance between the commitment and action. On this UN day we must be united than ever, united in action to make the world saver,” said in message.

"The United Nations is doing its utmost to respond – to address the big issues, to look at the big picture. We are forging a new multilateralism that can deliver real results for all people, especially those most in need.”
