Turkish Court charges 49 officers in coup plot
A Turkish court started hearings on coup plot. 49 military officers, among them admirals and generals were brought to court over an alleged plot to bring down the Islamist-rooted government.
According to the prosecution, an armed group prepared the “Sledgehammer” plan to overthrow the Turkish government as it threatened the secular regime in the country. The “Sledgehammer included blowing up some mosques during Friday prayers and turning stadiums into open-air prisons capable of holding tens of thousands of people if they challenged the troops, officials said.
Prosecutors are still questioning dozens of other high-ranking officers, including former chiefs of the Navy, Air Force and Special Forces.
