Earthquake of magnitude 6.4 hits Taiwan, injuring 11
An earthquake of magnitude 6.4 hit Taiwan early on Thursday, injuring 11 people and causing damage and at least one large fire in the southern part of the island. There have been no reported deaths, according to officials.
According to the Geological Survey, the 6.4 magnitude quake hit about 70 km from southern Kaohsiung city and triggered textile factory fire.
Transport services on the southern half of Taiwan were stopped; subway service in the city of Kaohsiung was temporarily disrupted.
Earthquakes often hit Taiwan. A strong quake in central Taiwan in 1999 killed more than two thousand people.
