Bill: only Georgian citizen can take state office in the country
Those Georgians, who hold any other citizenship in addition to Georgian, are no longer allowed taking state offices, according to a bill by Secretary of the Constitutional Commission of Georgia Tengiz Sharmanashvili.
“A Georgian official shouldn’t have any obligations to another state, this poses too many risks,” some media outlets quote Tengiz Sharmanashvili, citing Maestro TV of Georgia.
Georgia’s Foreign Minister Grigol Vashadze at the moment is completing the procedure of renunciation of Russian citizenship. Salome Zurabishvili, former foreign minister of Georgia and current leader of the oppositional “Georgia’s Way” Party, holds the French citizenship. Some media reported that former Defense Minister of Georgia David Kezerashvili had held Israeli citizenship.
Salome Zurabishvili is reported said in an interview with the Maestro TV that the new bill will be negatively perceived by the Georgian Diaspora. “Diaspora will be told that it has nothing to do with any development activities of Georgia,” she pointed.
