UN and CSTO to sign an agreement on cooperation

Secretaries-General of the United Nations and Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) Ban Ki-moon and Nikolai Bordyuzha will sign on Thursday an agreement on cooperation, Russia media reported.

CSTO includes Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan; they all are co-authors of the Resolution on Cooperation between UN and CSTO, signed on March 2. Russia repeatedly called to use CSTO’s potential in peace-making activities and fighting against terrorism.

The UN General Assembly, in its turn, called “to cooperate and develop direct relations with CSTO to make joint efforts in implementation of programs.” The adopted resolution also calls for regular consultations between organisations’ Secretaries-General.

UN-CSTO cooperation will develop in several directions and spheres. Included in UN-CSTO cooperation activities are those in sphere of regional security, measures against drug and weapon trafficking, fight against terrorism and crimes, human trafficking, and measures against technogenic and natural disastrous accidents.

Russia's Ambassador to the UN Vitaly Churkin told Kommersant paper that the agreement has both practical and political significance for CSTO. "With its signing, a formation of a political and legal framework between two organizations will be completed," he said.
