Azerbaijan: suicide committed again in Baku’s prison
A prisoner of the Baku isolation room committed suicide on August 26, APA information agency reported citing police of Sabuchin District of Baku.
Prisoner, Akif Fatullayev, killed himself, when was jailed as a suspect; there were not immediate reports on reasons of the self-killing. Police has already launched an investigation into the case.
It’s worth mentioning that this is the second incident during this month. At night of August 2-3, a 41-year old man, Alim Ismailov, committed suicide by hanging himself in the isolation room.
The international organisations have been repeatedly referring to this issue, they point at growing suicide toll at isolation rooms of Azerbaijani prison. In their reports, the foreign human rights defenders say that legislative and practical efforts to prevent tortures and other cruelty to prisoners in Azerbaijan don’t go with international standards, while applications protesting tortures are not being investigated in due course.
