UN Security Council Summit to be held under Gul’s presidency

Turkey’s President Abdullah Gul, whose country holds the rotating UN Security Council presidency in September, will chair on September 23 a summit aimed at discussion how to strengthen the council's primary mission -- maintaining international peace and security in a world of new and complex threats. On September 27, council’s members will gather together to discuss measures against terrorism. 

Turkey's UN Ambassador Ertugrul Apakan said that the summit will focus on preventive diplomacy, peacekeeping measures, and post-conflict peace agreements. The previous council’s summit with these issues on highlights was held in 2000.

The session will gather mostly presidents and prime ministers; Ertugrul Apakan said that the session on fight against the terrorism will be chaired by Foreign Minister of Turkey Ahmet Davutoglu.

Among highlights that Turkey will chair in September at the UN Security Council are items related to satiation in Nepal, Afghanistan, Liberia and Sierra Leone. In line with the tradition, a briefing will be held on the situation in the Middle East. Reports on sanctions against Iran and on preparation works for a referendum in Sudan will be delivered within the framework of the September summits.
