“Day of Rage” planned for Syria; protests scheduled for Feb 4-5

Syria appears to be next in line for civil unrest. Syrians are organizing campaigns utilizing Facebook and Twitter, issuing a “day of rage” in Damascus this week. On the heels of Egypt, Tunisia, Yemen, Jordan; Syria is utilizing social networking in order to demand sweeping political reforms in their government. Like Egypt and Tunisia, Syria’s government is seethed with corruption, poverty and unemployment, allvoices.com reports.

Staples such as bread and oil have seen subsidy cuts. Using the social network, the main Syrian protest page on Facebook is enticing people to protest in Damascus on February 4th and 5th. It will be a “day of rage” and the goal is to “end the state of emergency in Syria and end corruption,” state the organizers. Thus far the numbers of protesters is relatively small and most are outside of Syria.
