US ambassador: We are here to honor victims of 1915 events
I am here today on behalf of President Obama and Secretary of State Kerry to honor the victims of the 1915 tragic events. U.S. congressmen and members of the Armenian community of the United States came with us, U.S. Ambassador to Armenia John Heffern told reporters during his visit to the Tsitsernakaberd Memorial Complex dedicated to the memory of the victims of the Armenian Genocide.
The ambassador said that in a few hours the U.S. president will make a statement in connection with the 1915 Events Remembrance Day.
According to J. Heffern, the president will honor 1.5 million Armenians who fell victim to massacres. The U.S. ambassador expressed his confidence that Barack Obama will condemn those events and the president’s statement will be strong, with the facts of the 1915-23 events being stressed and acknowledged in it.
Mr. Heffern also said that the opening of the border and the establishment of diplomatic relations is of importance to Armenia and Turkey. “The U.S. will continue its efforts in this direction,” he stated.
