Slepnev: Armenia may join Customs Union in 2014
Armenia may join the Customs Union as soon as 2014, Trade Minister of the Eurasian Economic Commission Andrey Slepnev was quoted as saying by gazeta.ru.
He stressed the high level of preparedness, noting that no differences over the draft agreement on Armenia’s accession have remained.
According to the minister, the Commission has prepared a roadmap for Armenia.
Armenia is isolated from the Customs Union territorially so the possibilities of exercising control over commodity flows should be worked out. But the main problem lies in the differences between obligations of Armenia and Russia towards WTO, Slepnev said noting that a transition period should be envisaged, during which “we will regulate the entry of a WTO member with different obligations into the Customs Union”.
