Armenian president objects to arming of border residents
Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan met today with members of the Public Council. A number of urgent issues, including security issues, were discussed, according to the presidential press service.
In particular, the meeting participants addressed migration, its causes, consequences and solutions to this problem; Armenia’s accession to the Eurasian Economic Union and new development opportunities that membership in EEU will create; problems of enhancing the security and protection of the border zone; mining and environmental problems, as well as issues related to the electricity tariff rise, introduction of the accumulative pension system, and implementation of constitutional reforms.
The Public Council members received information concerning the indicated issues, the work done by the state to deal with them, and further programs.
The council members also made numerous proposals for reinforcing the border zone and ensuring its security.
A lively debate took place over the proposal to arm residents of border villages. The president objected to that proposal. He spoke in detail about the current opportunities created in the Armenian armed forces for border regions’ residents capable of holding arms in their hands.
Serzh Sargsyan also responded to questions of Public Council members. Further work of that structure was also discussed during the meeting.
