Russia responds to statement of US embassy in Yerevan
The Russian embassy in Armenia has issued a response statement in connection with the statement that the U.S. embassy in Armenia earlier spread among state and business organizations of Armenia regarding the risks that will arise from cooperation with the Russian companies and natural persons included in the U.S. list of sanctions.
“It does not become a diplomatic mission to tell the authorities of the host country who they should maintain contact with and how, especially by using thinly veiled threats against a sovereign state. We believe that Armenia’s business circles can take their own decisions on business issues and do not need somebody else’s prompts.
We express our concern over American attempts to complicate activities of Russian business in the Republic of Armenia. All the Russian companies represented in the territory of Armenia, including VTB Armenia and Areximbank, are under its jurisdiction and operate under the Armenian law. They receive profits, pay taxes in Armenia and generate employment for a considerable part of the population. The calls to sever ties with Russian companies disavow the U.S. representatives’ hypocritical statements about the readiness to promote Armenia’s economic development. Obvious elements of unscrupulous trade and economic rivalry are also visible here in the actions of the U.S.
Taking the opportunity, we want to indicate once again the artificiality and illegitimacy of anti-Russian sanctions imposed by the U.S. that will lead to nothing but a further deterioration of Russian-American relations and a very unfavorable background in international affairs. By making semblance of “consistency” in its current behavior, Washington is just trying to avoid responsibility for the tragic events in Ukraine and get even with Russia for its independent policy”, the Russian embassy’s statement reads.
