R. Petrosyan: Reforms are aimed at improving government system
The constitutional reforms are aimed at improving the system of government in Armenia, former deputy of Republican Party of Armenia parliamentary faction Rafik Petrosyan told journalists today.
“Undivided authority has formed in the country. I don’t know what goals are pursued and by whom, but the goal of these reforms is to improve the system of government in the country, as a result of which power will be concentrated not in the hands of one man, but in the hands of a collegiate body – the National Assembly that will involve the opposition as well,” R. Petrosyan noted.
In his words, the European Commission for Democracy through Law (better known as the Venice Commission) also expressed a positive opinion about the constitutional reforms.
“True, they indicated some issues which were not included in the draft document of reforms. In particular, the proposals are related to enhancing the opposition’s role,” Petrosyan explained.
According to him, the Venice Commission also proposes that the Constitutional Court should establish that a referendum shall be held prior to joining an international organization.
“Of course, people will not feel positive changes immediately after the adoption of reforms, but progress will be perceived some time later,” R. Petrosyan said.
