Armenia 78th on Press Freedom Index
Armenia ranks as the 78th country on the annual Press Freedom Index compiled by the Reporters without Borders.
Top countries on the list are Finland, Norway, Denmark, Netherlands and Sweden. Eritrea is the last country on this years ranking.
Armenia’s neighbors, Georgia, Turkey and Azerbaijan, rank respectively the 69th, 149th and 162nd on the index. Russia has shown a slight decline since last year, climbing down from the 150th to the 152nd position.
“The Reporters Without Borders World Press Freedom Index ranks the performance of 180 countries according to a range of criteria that include media pluralism and independence, respect for the safety and freedom of journalists, and the legislative, institutional and infrastructural environment in which the media operate.
“The 2015 World Press Freedom Index highlights the worldwide deterioration in freedom of information in 2014. Beset by wars, the growing threat from non-state operatives, violence during demonstrations and the economic crisis, media freedom is in retreat on all five continents,” reads a statement on the organization’s website.
