30 years after disastrous earthquake: Armenia remembers victims of 1988 natural disaster (photos)
Armenia marks today the 30th anniversary of disastrous earthquake that took lives of 25,000 people, completely destroyed the town of Spitak and nearby villages.
The earthquake left 100,000 injured, caused destructions in 21 towns and 324 villages. About 80% of buildings in Armenia’s second town of Gyumri were destroyed. The disaster affected more than 40% of the country’s territory, provinces of Shirak, Lori, Aragatsotn and Tavush.
The quake hit on December 7 at 11.41 a.m.
Thirty years after the quake still 2,300 families in Gyumri are living in temporary asylums.
