UN representatives involved in different missions share the concerns presented by the representatives of Armenia’s civil society
Preliminary session of the UN Human Rights Committee regarding Armenia took place in Geneva on December 11.
In the framework of the event co-founder of Legal Line NGO Siranush Sahakyan delivered a speech about the situation regarding the human rights in Armenia.
Speaking to Aysor.am, Sahakyan said that in the sidelines of the UN Armenia has ratified a number of documents assuming certain commitments the implementation of which is being periodically reviewed.
“In the sidelines of the session the other member states, sharing the concerns of the civil society representatives, may make proposals to the state which as a result of a review may become instructions for the state to implement during the next four years,” Sahakyan said.
She said during her speech she presented the situation in Armenia, referred to the independence of the judicial system, referred to the situation over the Constitutional Court.
Sahakyan said she proposed UN special rapporteur to visit Armenia and report about the situation to the UN after studying the mentioned circumstances on site.
“If Armenia refuses to accept them it will harm Armenia’s rating in the UN,” she said, adding that if it provides the invitation but does not assist the rapporteur to implement his/her duties it will mean demonstration of disrespect toward the establishment.
Sahakyan said the rapporteur must prepare a special report basing on his fact-finding activities and consult with the state to find solutions to the issues registered in the report.
She also stressed that UN representatives involved in different missions shared the concerns presented by the representatives of Armenia’s civil society.
