Armenia plans to participate in UN peacekeeping mission in Lebanon
Permanent Representative of Armenia to the UN Ambassador Zohrab Mnatsakanyan attended the UN Security Council-organized debate on peacekeeping operations and the assessment of UN and regional partnerships, Armenian Foreign Ministry said.
In his speech, Z. Mnatsakanyan stressed the importance of the United Nations’ key role in planning, coordination and carrying out of peacekeeping operations.
Speaking about Armenia’s experience in peacekeeping operations, Z. Mnatsakanyan underlined the significant potential the country has accumulated in the past two decades, noting in particular the existence of a peacekeeping unit in the Armenian armed forces.
“As a country involved in peacekeeping operations, Armenia has accumulated significant potential while participating in NATO peacekeeping missions in Kosovo and Afghanistan. In October of this year, Armenia plans to participate in the UN’s peacekeeping operation in Lebanon, which is striking demonstration of the fact that our involvement within the UN framework has expanded. As an OSCE member state, Armenia views the organization’s possible role in peacekeeping operations considering each situation and it cooperates with OSCE member states on training of peacekeepers,” Mr. Mnatsakanyan said.
