Protesters and police clash outside Russian consulate in Gyumri
The situation in Gyumri is tense at the moment. Most participants of the protest outside the Shark regional prosecutor’s office decided to march to the building of the Russian consulate general in Gyumri.
Police cordoned off the road to the Russian consulate. Clashes broke out between police and protesters who tried to break through the cordon.
According to some information, one person is hospitalized after being injured in clashes.
A protest was held earlier today outside the Shirak prosecutor office to demand the handover of Russian soldier Valery Permyakov accused of killing six people in Gyumri to Armenian law enforcers.
Protests are underway in Gyumri in the past two days. Protesters demand Permyakov’s handover to Armenian law enforcers. In addition to hundreds of people, over 300 cars participated in a procession yesterday. Protesters marched from the Shirak regional prosecutor’s office to the Russian 102nd military base, despite Armenian law enforcers’ warning that the area is under control of the Russian Federation. The protesters issued an ultimatum and gave the Armenian authorities 22 hours to meet their demands.
Six members of the Avetisyan family, including a two-year-old child, were killed in the city of Gyumri on January 12. The seventh member of the family, a six-month-old boy, was hospitalized in critical condition with stab wounds.
Valery Permyakov, a serviceman of the Russian military base, was detained shortly afterwards. He is being held at the Russian military base in Gyumri. On Wednesday he was charged with crimes under the Criminal Codes of Armenia and Russia.
