Armenia’s Defense Minister to depart for USA
Armenia’s Defense Minister Davit Tonoyan is leaving for the USA to discuss cooperation issues there, Voice of America reports.
The visit will start from Kansas where Armenian peacekeepers and rescuers have been trained during the past 15 years.
The Armenian-American military cooperation is mainly focused on Armenia’s participation in peacekeeping mission under USA and NATO auspices.
Pentagon highly rates Armenia’s contribution to the peacekeeping activity. Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Russia, Ukraine and Eurasia Laura Cooper stated in her recent speech that Armenia’s participation in ensuring peace in Afghanistan and Kosovo is a significant factor.
While in New York, the Armenia’s defense minister will participate in the meeting of the heads of defense departments of UN peacekeeping forces.
Another promising sector of Armenian-American cooperation may become sale of American weapon to Armenia, the issue raised by the U.S. President’s advisor on national security affairs John Bolton during his visit to Armenia.
In the sidelines of the visit, Tonoyan will also meet with the representatives of the Armenian community and speak about Armenia’s defense strategy and regional security.
