Karine Danielyan: Armenia gradually becomes trash dump
Armenia is gradually becoming a trash dump, despite its leading positions in science, ecologist, Chairwoman of For Sustainable Human Development NGO Karine Danielyan told reporters.
In this connection she mentioned some cities that do not have trash cans in the streets but where garbage disposal is well organized. “In Almaty and Astana, garbage disposal work is done at night, we did not see any refuse collectors in the daytime,” she noted.
According to K. Danielyan, refuse collectors in Yerevan remove only trash from trash cans, but leave packages around them. “It is a serious mistake – they believe that it is not their obligation to remove all the garbage, but people are not to blame for the fact that trash cans are almost always full. In Yerevan, trash containers are full to the brim and citizens can’t find a place to dispose of domestic waste,” she said, giving the example of Mher Mkrtchian Street from where a narrow road littered with trash leads to the UN Office in Yerevan.
“What would UN officials say during their visits to Armenia after having to travel to the UN Office through such a heap of garbage?” she said, explaining the problem by both the Armenian mentality and poor management.
