Yerevan ranks third among former Soviet cities by tree planting

The surveys “Yerevan Residents about Yerevan” conducted by Gallup International Association and Armenian Marketing Association show that the increased green zones in the city top the list of positive measures implemented by Yerevan Municipality, Head of the Municipality’s Environmental Protection Department Avet Martirosian announced at a press conference today.

According to him, Yerevan took third place by the amount of work on tree planting and flower arrangement at the conference on the preservation of green belts in cities of the former USSR. The event was held in Kiev on February 21-23.

Based on the instructions of Yerevan Mayor Taron Margarian, trees are planted on irrigated lands only. Some 40,000 trees were planted in Yerevan last year. About 50,000 evergreen trees and shrubs will be planted this spring.

“The current index is 8 square meters of greenery per resident, and we plan to increase it to 12 square meters within 3-4 years. Serious progress has been made,” Avet Martirosian said.
