Syunik governor S. Khachatrian resigns

“I regret not having been able to prevent the tragic incident that happened outside my house. An objective investigation will give answers to all questions.

Every person has to answer for what he has done. Including Suren Khachatrian, an Armenian citizen. I have decided to resign as governor prior to the end of the preliminary investigation and the superior body has already given permission. From now on I am no longer the governor of Syunik province,” says a statement on the website of Syunik regional administration.

Let us remind you that shots were fired when an argument broke out outside the Syunik governor’s house in the city of Goris on the evening of June 1. Former candidate for Goris mayor Avetik Budaghian was killed in the shooting. His brother, Colonel Artak Budaghian, received a severe gunshot wound and was taken to a military hospital. Yet another man involved in the argument, Nikolai Abrahamian, was also wounded and hospitalized.
