Mayor: Unified payment system for transport should be introduced

Yerevan Mayor Taron Margarian and the factions of Yerevan Council of Elders discussed today the public transport fare hikes in Yerevan.

“Social problems arise, causing discontent. Until we grant privileges to some social groups, the social burden on them and their families will grow. I am concerned not only about the problem of vulnerable sections of the population, but also about safe traffic. We cannot ensure a civilized transport system it with a fare of 100 AMD,” the mayor said.

In his words, in parallel with improvement of the transport basis, it is also necessary to exercise strict control of services provided.
The mayor announced that a commission will be soon set up. Composed of members of the interested departments and organizations, the commission will propose most optimal solutions to the problem.

‘The stress will be laid on the introduction of a unified payment system of transport fares, taking into account the interests of the socially vulnerable sections of the population. In this way we will increase social responsibility of passenger transportation companies, the Yerevan mayor stated.
