Psychologist: Economic crisis triggered new spate of suicides

A difficult social situation contributes to an increase in the number of suicides, but family problems and mental disorders also cause people to commit suicide, psychologist Samvel Tadevosian told a press conference held today in connection with the World Suicide Prevention Day observed on September 10.

In his words, the global economic crisis triggered a new spate of suicides throughout the world.

“It does not mean that the number of suicides is greater in underdeveloped countries. People commit suicides for personal reasons as well. So preventive measures should be taken even among school-age children,” the psychologist said.

In the words of Samvel Tadevosian, the World Health Organization last published a report on suicides five years ago, in 2008. According to that report, the number of suicides in Armenia is quite small: 2 in 100,000 Armenian citizens commit suicide.
