Anne Brasseur elected PACE President by an absolute majority

The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) elected new President on the first day of its winter plenary session on 27 January. Two candidatures have been received: Anne Brasseur (Luxembourg, ALDE) and Robert Walter (United Kingdom, NI).

After the first round of the election for the President of the Assembly, Anne Brasseur obtained 165 votes and Robert Walter 125 votes. Ms Brasseur, having obtained an absolute majority of representatives of the Assembly, set at 159, is elected President of the Parliamentary Assembly.

The new President will serve for a one-year term, renewable once.
