Appropriate work being done with Azerbaijani family in Armenia

Appropriate work is being done with the Azerbaijani family that requested political asylum in Armenia, Secretary of Armenia’s National Security Council Arthur Baghdasarian told reporters today.

In his words, after the work is completed, a decision on their further fate will be made. Arthur Baghdasarian said that the solution of the issue requires certain legal procedures.

Armenia’s National Security Service (NSS) said that on January 29 an Azerbaijani citizen, 37-year-old resident of Baku Javid Orujayev along with his wife and three minor children requested political asylum at Bagrateshen checkpoint on the Armenian-Georgian border.

“Persecution by Azerbaijani authorities was given as a reason for such a decision. In particular, J. Orujayev said that the Azerbaijani special services started exerting pressure on him and his family after his marriage with 29-year-old Roza Mirzoyeva, a Baku resident of Armenian descent. J. Orujayev was forced to agree to cooperate with Azerbaijani special services. Through his wife’s relatives living abroad, he began to collect information about Armenia and the Armenian Diaspora,” NSS of Armenia said.

“According to J. Orujayev, being aware of the dangerous situation, he made an unsuccessful attempt to establish permanent residency in a European country, but he was deported to Baku where the special services stepped up the pressure on him. After finding himself in a desperate situation and realizing the real threat to his family, Orijayev made a decision to seek political asylum in Armenia,” NSS said.

According to the NSS statement, the UN Yerevan Office and the Migration Agency of Armenia are now dealing with the problem of the Azerbaijani family’s fate.
