Serzh Sargsyan not to run for president anymore

Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan has announced that he will not run for president of Armenia anymore.

“I officially state prior to the start of discussions on constitutional reforms that I will not run for Armenian president anymore,” S. Sargsyan said at the meeting with members of the specialized commission on constitutional reforms under the Armenian president.

Serzh Sargsyan said that at the current stage of development, the existing model of government is the most acceptable for Armenia, the presidential press service reported. The president also believes that in Armenia, a person in his lifetime should not aspire to high posts of governing the country more than twice.

“I head the largest political force in Armenia – Republican Party and, regardless of the choice of the constitutional mechanism for running the country, our party will continue to play a crucial role in accordance with these laws,” Serzh Sargsyan said.

The main clauses of the provisional version of the draft concept of the constitutional reforms in Armenia were presented to the Armenian president today by the head of the specialized commission on constitutional reforms under the Armenian president, Chairman of the Constitutional Court of Armenia Gagik Harutyunian. These clauses are mainly related to the guarantees of human rights and fundamental freedoms, the functional and institutional efficiency of the judicial branch, and the forms of governing the state and holding elections.
