Armenia marks First Republic Day today

On May 28 Armenia marks Day of the First Republic of Armenia.

By defeating the Turkish army at Sardarapat, Armenian troops prevented the Turkish invasion of the capital city of Yerevan in May 1918. Thanks to the victory, the Armenian people restored their statehood lost centuries ago.

The First Republic of Armenia was proclaimed by the Armenian National Council on May 28, 1918 in Tiflis.

Although the First Republic did not exist for a long time, May 28 is a significant day for the Armenians who mark this holiday with numerous celebrations.
