Heritage Party demands suspension of Armenia’s entry into EaEU and CU

 Heritage Party issued a statement demanding the suspension of Armenia’s entry into the Customs Union (CU) and the Eurasian Economic Union (EaEU).

Armenia’s entry into the CU and the EaEU does not stem from the country’s interests and endangers the security and sovereignty of the two Armenian republics, the party said in the statement.

The statement quotes the words of Kazakhstan’s President Nursultan Nazarbayev at the Astana meeting of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council on May 29.

As was reported earlier, at the May 29 meeting Nursultan Nazarbayev read the letter of Azerbaijani counterpart Ilham Aliyev and then said, addressing Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan: “So as not to excite our friend in Azerbaijan, you should join the Eurasian Union with the borders fixed in the UN – as you joined the World Trade Organization”.

“Although the EaEU is established for the protection of its members’ interests, it is not going to protect the national interests of Armenia. Quite the opposite: it already defends the interests of Azerbaijan that did not express any intention to join that union, is not a member of the Collective Security Treaty Organization, and is at war with Armenia. An attempt is being made to impose a precondition on Armenia, a precondition which was not set for another member of the union – Russia that joined the EaEU not with the ‘internationally recognized borders”, the statement says, stressing that despite Azerbaijan’s absence in that union, its interests are put above Armenia’s interests, while Nagorno Karabakh may become the ‘cost’ of all this.

So Heritage Party demands that Armenia’s accession to the CU and the EaEU should be halted. The party also calls upon Armenian political forces to express their official position on the dangerous process of Armenia’s accession to the Eurasian Economic Union, also in the light of the realities that arose in Astana.

Besides, Heritage Party calls on all healthy forces of Armenia to combine efforts in order to find ways to oppose the challenges endangering the security and sovereignty of Armenia and Artsakh.
