Women’s Council under Armenian prime minister holds sitting

Women’s Council under the Armenian prime minister held today a regular sitting chaired by Prime Minister Hovik Abrahamyan, the government’s press office said.

The Council discussed the 5th and 6th reports on the implementation by Armenia of the UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women.

The Council members exchanged opinions about the reports. Summing up the results, H. Abrahamyan instructed the working group to finalize the documents taking into account the proposals and then to submit them to the Council for approval.

The participants also discussed the development of a national mechanism on the policy aimed at improving status of women and ensuring equality of men and women. In this connection, issues related to the intensification of activities of the Women’s Council, a review of approaches, and extension of its membership were debated. The prime minister said that proposals to raise the Council’s efficiency should be examined by the working group and presented by September.

“We are interested in increasing women’s participation in sociopolitical and economic spheres. Steps have already been taken in this direction and the process should continue,” the head of government said.
