Safaryan: Constitutional reforms change rules of game

The four non-government parties represented in the parliament will stage a rally on September 30, but the purpose is still not clear, Stepan Safaryan, a member of ‘Hello, Yerevan’ faction of Yerevan Council of Elders, told reporters today.

“The four” will hold a rally on September 30. People will come to show that they came to do something, but the question is what they do,” Safaryan said.

In his opinion, ‘the four’ will never raise the issue of a complete change of power, they just make semblance of activities going on the parliament and outside it. “They also obviously avoid launching a vote in no confidence in the current government,” he noted.
When asked whether it is possible that the second Armenian President Robert Kocharyan is behind the actions of ‘the four”, Safaryan found it difficult to give a concrete answer, adding that Heritage Party is unlikely to resort to such a step.

He, however, believes that crisis is brewing in the non-government political forces and it is a serious problem – “the ongoing events on the political scene over constitutional reforms demonstrated that”.

In his words, by starting the constitutional reforms, President Serzh Sarsgyan and the Republican Party of Armenia (HHK) changed rules of game, which does not agree with the plans of “the four”.

“The four” consider it important not to allow any changes in the rules of game. HHK threw them into confusion. Therefore passions will flare as an obvious re-arrangement of forces is going on. ARFD Party openly says that it supports the constitutional reforms, while the three other parties of “the four” are against those reforms,” Safaryan said.
