Russian ambassador: Armenia’s entry into EEU correct strategic decision
Armenia’s membership in the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) is a correct strategic decision, which does not mean that doors of cooperation with other countries are closed, Russian Ambassador to Armenia Ivan Volynkin told reporters today.
In his words, Russia also develops its relations with European Union countries as it is quite normal that a state has multilateral relations. “The main thing is that it would not do harm,” the diplomat stressed.
As regards the regular rally of three Armenian non-pro-government political forces held yesterday, on Oct. 24 in Yerevan’s Liberty Square, the idea of a change of power and the concerns that these processes could result in a deterioration of relations with Russia, Ivan Volynkin said that on the contrary, almost all the opposition forces support Armenia’s membership of EEU.
“None of them, except for one party, is against that membership,” he noted.
Asked to assess the speech made by the leader of the opposition party Armenian National Congress (HAK), first Armenian President Levon Ter-Petrosyan during yesterday’s rally, the Russian ambassador said he is unwilling to make any assessments, but he paid attention to the fact that most of Ter-Petrosyan’s speech was about Armenia’s membership in the EEU.
