Russia’s embassy hails unequivocal condemnation of desecration of monument to Russian playwright Alexander Griboyedov
Russia’s embassy in Armenia has issued a statement over the desecration of monument to Russian playwright Alexander Griboyedov in Yerevan.
“We share the position of the official Yerevan which strictly described this act with the monument of big friend of Armenia Alexander Griboyedov. We suppose that the unequivocal condemnation of this act by the Armenian society testifies how strong the friendly, allied Armenian-Russian relations having deep historic roots are,” the embassy said in the statement.
It has been reported earlier that civil activist Shahen Harutyunyan spilled red paint on Griboyedov’s monument.
Spokesperson of Armenia’s PM Vladimir Karapetyan responded to the incident, saying that they condemn the act.
“We condemn the act. Such manifestations of vandalism must not take place in our society,” Karapetyan said.
Vice-speaker of Armenia’s parliament Alen Simonyan too expressed his negative attitude describing the action as “act of vandalism.”
“This person sumply does not know who Griboyedov is, what role he played and what he was murdered for. I do not want to say a bad word, but it is a case when I could have,” Alen Simonyan told the reporters.
“It was just unsuccessful attempt to draw attention to own personality which to my delight, raised negative attitude among all the layers of the public,” the vice-speaker said.
