Justice will ultimately prevail: Archbishop Mkrtich is strong and dignified

The court today ruled to lift the detention of Bishop Mkrtich Proshyan, Primate of the Aragatsotn Diocese, and to replace it with house arrest as a preventive measure.

Roman Aharonyan, Archbishop Mkrtich’s lawyer, told Aysor.am that although they have not yet received the full written decision, the court has announced the restrictions imposed on the Archbishop.

The lawyer expressed confidence that justice will ultimately prevail.

“There is simply no alternative,” he noted.

Asked about the Archbishop’s reaction and whether the decision had been expected, Aharonyan responded: “The Holy Father is strong and dignified.”

Archbishop Mkrtich has been in custody since October 16. He is charged under two articles: obstructing the exercise of voting rights through the use of official authority, and coercing participation in gatherings by again using his official powers.

The Archbishop denies the charges.
