Chikungunya fever case reported in Armenia

On February 18, Armenia confirmed a case of Chikungunya fever. The patient contracted the infection from a mosquito bite in the Seychelles. Currently, the patient’s condition is satisfactory, according to the National Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

Chikungunya fever has a latent period of 2–12 days. Its main symptoms include fever, severe joint and muscle pain, skin rash, and weakness. The disease is transmitted only through mosquito bites and cannot be spread from person to person. There is no specific treatment, and the vaccine is not widely available.

Risk groups include the elderly, people with chronic illnesses, and pregnant women. Mortality is rare, around 0.1%, primarily affecting those in the high-risk groups.

Preventive measures:

Use insect repellents

Wear long-sleeved, protective clothing

Utilize mosquito nets and other insect control devices

Recent Chikungunya outbreaks have been reported in the Seychelles, Sri Lanka, Suriname, Bolivia, and Cuba. Travelers returning from these regions who experience symptoms should consult a doctor or infectious disease specialist promptly.
