Azerbaijan has destroyed WWII memorial complex in Martuni, Artsakh

Azerbaijan has completely destroyed the memorial complex in the city of Martuni, Artsakh, dedicated to the victims of the Great Patriotic War and the Artsakh Liberation War, Artsakh’s Cultural Heritage Ombudsman Artak Mkrtchyan reported, publishing photographs.

“Azerbaijan continues to destroy the Armenian cultural and historical heritage of Artsakh at the state level.

In the city of Martuni, Artsakh, the memorial complex dedicated to the memory of those who fell in the Great Patriotic War (1941–1945) and the Artsakh Liberation War has been completely destroyed. Opened on May 7, 2007, the complex symbolically united the memory of heroes of different generations. Today it no longer exists.

This is not vandalism. It is cultural genocide.
This is a targeted policy aimed at erasing the Armenian trace, history, and memory in Artsakh.

Particularly cynical is the fact that in 2025 Azerbaijan was elected to the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, while the systematic destruction of cultural heritage continues in the occupied territories.

The silence of the international community amounts to acquiescence.
The destruction of cultural heritage is also a crime.
Monuments can be destroyed, but a people’s memory cannot.
History cannot be erased.”
