We need a small nuclear power plant and are seeking the best offer on who will build it: Pashinyan

In recent years, we have been able to double the capacity of nuclear energy infrastructure in Armenia built since Soviet times; now we do not need a large nuclear power plant, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said while answering questions at the Polish Institute of International Relations. He addressed whether, given that the Metsamor Nuclear Power Plant is to be closed in about 10 years, a decision has been made on who will build a new plant – whether the United States, Russia, or another country.

“According to our experts, we need a small nuclear power plant; that is why we have made a preliminary decision in favor of a small modular reactor. We are now discussing this option with the United States, Russia, China, South Korea, and France. We are looking for the best offer for our country,” Pashinyan said.

He noted that the process is ongoing and no final decision has yet been made, as different technological solutions are still under consideration.
