Armenia on European list of countries arresting journalists

Armenia has been included for the first time in the list of countries that arrest journalists, according to the annual report published today by the Council of Europe and its partner organization, the Platform for the Safety of Journalists.

“At the end of 2025, Armenia was recorded for the first time on the platform among the countries that arrest journalists or other media actors. This followed the arrests of podcasters Vazgen Saghatelyan and Narek Samsonyan,” the report states.

According to the document, in addition to Armenia, journalists are currently imprisoned in five other European countries: Russia (58 journalists), Azerbaijan (36), Belarus (27), Turkey (24), and Georgia (1).
