Effective competitive environment contributes to the diversification of the economy: Gevorg Papoyan

The annual workshop of the International Competition Network (ICN) Advocacy Working Group has kicked off in Yerevan, attended by delegates from 32 countries, including representatives of competition authorities and experts, the Ministry of Economy reports.

“The Minister of Economy of Armenia, Gevorg Papoyan, delivered an opening speech at the event, noting that competition is one of the key conditions for sustainable economic development, and the policy of increasing competition has also been enshrined in the government’s Doctrine of Economic and Institutional Transformation.”

“An effective competitive environment contributes to the diversification of the economy, the promotion of innovation, increased investment attractiveness, and more effective protection of consumer interests. Therefore, the development of competition policy and its effective implementation play an important role in the process of shaping and implementing economic policy,” Minister Papoyan noted.

The aim of the conference was to review and assess the results of previous years, as well as to outline ways to further develop cooperation and working activities among competition authorities.

Gegham Gevorgyan, Chairman of the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, delivered a keynote speech on the topic “The Importance of Competition Protection in a Modern, Rapidly Changing Economy.”

Lilya Sirakanian, Deputy Minister of Economy, also participated in the event. 

In 2024, ICN announced a competition to host the workshop, as a result of which the application of the Republic of Armenia, represented by the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, was recognized as the winner,” the news release said.
