ECHR obliges Azerbaijan to submit prisoners’ verdicts by August 31

The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has obliged Azerbaijan to submit prisoners’ verdicts by August 31, the International and Comparative Law Center NGO reports.

“Azerbaijan has been continuously filing applications with the European Court of Human Rights, requesting the lifting of the interim measure under which it is obliged to periodically report on the conditions of detention of Armenian prisoners of war held in Azerbaijan, as well as on their health status. Azerbaijan maintains that all relevant procedures are being conducted transparently and publicly.

On April 9, 2026, the ECHR rejected Azerbaijan’s latest application, once again obliging the Azerbaijani government to continue providing information on the conditions of detention of detainees, as well as their most recent medical records and other documents related to medical examinations and treatment. The Court also ordered the submission of copies of judgments issued in the criminal proceedings initiated against the Armenian POWs, or summaries of those judgments, including the reasoning of the judges based on the evidence in the case.

The next deadline for submitting the report is August 31, 2026,” the statement said.
