Armenia’s status in the Eurasian Economic Union to be discussed in Astana

Russia wants to see Armenia remain part of the Eurasian Economic Union, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overchuk told TASS.

He stated that the issue of Armenia’s status within the organization will be discussed during the EAEU summit scheduled to take place in Astana on May 29.

“I repeat, we do not want Armenia to leave the EAEU. We want Armenia to continue to prosper, but we also see the problems that could arise in the event of membership in, or rapprochement with, the European Union. In fact, these problems are already beginning to emerge,” the Russian deputy prime minister noted.

Overchuk emphasized that it would be better for Armenia to make a decision quickly, saying that such an approach would be fairer.

“Moreover, this uncertainty forces businesses to adopt a wait-and-see attitude and hinders the development of long-term economic relations. But I emphasize once again: we want Armenia to remain in the EAEU. The choice belongs to the Armenian people,” he added.
