The elections in Armenia were held under unprecedented pressure on the opposition and interference from the West, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said.

She also noted that Russia intends to shape its policy toward Armenia based on the real actions of the Armenian leadership. According to Zakharova, support for the Civil Contract party has significantly declined as a result of the elections.

Zakharova stated that Moscow has always been, and will continue to be, interested in the existence of a strong and truly sovereign Armenia.

In her view, the elections clearly demonstrated that Armenian society remains highly polarized. At the same time, she said there is broad public demand in Armenia for the development of ties with Russia and for maintaining the country’s future membership in the Eurasian Economic Union.
