PACE registers concerns during election campaign

The parliamentary elections provided voters with an opportunity to freely choose between different political forces. At the same time, external pressures had a significant impact on voters throughout the campaign, said Farah Karimi, Special Coordinator of the PACE observation mission, in Yerevan.

“The campaign was characterized by confrontational approaches and divisive rhetoric. Pressure from state officials to participate in events organized by the ruling party, as well as the social and economic measures taken, raise serious concerns about the freedom of choice during the election campaign. Insufficient oversight and regulation of campaign finances limited transparency and opportunities for public oversight,” the mission coordinator said.

She noted that the elections took place at an important and pivotal stage in Armenia’s development.

“I highly appreciate the efforts of Armenian voters for their strong dedication,” said the mission’s special coordinator, adding that observers gave a positive assessment of voting in 1,403 polling stations.
