Telegram fined 3.5 million rubles for violating Russian law

A court in Moscow has fined Telegram 3.5 million rubles for failing to comply with Russian legislation governing social networks.

The Tagansky District Court of Moscow found Telegram Messenger Inc. guilty of failing to fulfill the legal obligations imposed on social network owners, an Interfax correspondent reported from the courtroom.

“Telegram Messenger Inc. must be fined 3.5 million rubles,” the judge ruled.

The company was found guilty under Part 2 of Article 13.50 of Russia’s Code of Administrative Offenses, which concerns the failure of social network owners to take measures to monitor content on their platforms and/or restrict access to prohibited information.
