Motion to initiate criminal prosecution and detain Narek Karapetyan to be considered today

An extraordinary session of the Central Election Commission has been convened for 5:00 p.m. today.

At the session, the CEC will consider a motion submitted by the Prosecutor General’s Office concerning Narek Karapetyan, a member of the Strong Armenia party.

The Prosecutor General’s Office is seeking permission to initiate public criminal prosecution against Karapetyan and to deprive him of his liberty.

Karapetyan is expected to receive his parliamentary mandate later today.

Aram Vardevanyan, a member of the Strong Armenia party and lawyer, described the move as an example of political persecution.

“This is, to put it mildly, a mockery of the law,” he said.
