Narek Karapetyan ordered to post AMD 1 billion bail and barred from leaving the country

A ban on leaving the country and AMD 1 billion bail were chosen as preventive measures against Narek Karapetyan, the first candidate on the electoral list of the “Strong Armenia” party. The Prosecutor General’s Office told Aysor.am.

The Prosecutor’s Office did not provide details of the case, noting that they concern the preliminary investigation.

Yesterday the prosecutor initiated public criminal prosecution against Narek Karapetyan under Part 2 of Article 236 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Armenia (forcing participation in a rally through violence or the threat thereof) and Part 3 of Article 296 (money laundering on an especially large scale).

Earlier, following a two-day discussion, the Central Electoral Commission granted permission to prosecute and charge Narek Karapetyan but rejected the Prosecutor’s Office’s motion to detain him.
