Over 100 homeless sleep on streets in Yerevan

According to unofficial data, over 100 homeless people sleep on the streets in Yerevan and in Gyumri, though there is no exact statistics, Anahit Gevorgyan, Deputy Head of the Department of Disabled and Elderly People's Issues at the Armenian Ministry of Social Security, told a news conference.

In her words, 1,260 homeless have been sheltered by a special asylum since 2006.

In return, Arthur Markosyan, Deputy Director of an asylum for homeless, said that in five years their organization helped 22 homeless return to their families and another 24 find a job.

Note that a homeless person can stay at an asylum no longer than 60 days.

Meanwhile Markosyan stressed that they have difficulties in establishing a new asylum due to the state budget reduction (AMD 54m instead of former AMD 69m). AMD 2,500 is needed daily to provide lodging and food to one homeless.
