“To Congress, mere participation is of great importance”
The decision of Prosperous Armenia Party (BHK) not to field its presidential candidate opens up new opportunities and obligations for the Armenian National Congress which has to specify the format of its participation in the election, said Director of “Caucasus” Institute, political scientist Alexander Iskandarian.
In his words, the Armenian National Congress (HAK) has three options to choose from: not to run in the election, to run separately by nominating Levon Ter-Petrosian, or to nominate a new leader.
“In the first case the political force will make “unmasking” statements, speak once again about the rigged election, and, due to this, not to run in the election. This is a regular step. In the second case, if the first Armenian president is nominated as candidate, he may also receive votes from BHK supporters and collect more votes than it did in the parliamentary elections,” Iskandarian said.
According to him, at the moment the HAK candidate is unlikely to receive more than 51% of the votes.
“To the Congress, mere participation is of great importance”, said the political scientist in conclusion.
