Media should be regulated by law

The Public Council of Armenia should pay attention to the observance of the ban on placing pornographic materials in mass media outlets. Fines should be imposed on those media outlets that try to raise their rating in this way, film director Arshak Zakarian said, expressing concern at a press conference today.

Arshak Zakarian said that a large number of Armenian websites try to promote themselves by posting such materials. «You open a social page and see a material entitled «brother engages in sex with his sister». An Armenian media outlet informs us that a mother and her daughter appeared together in a pornographic video,» he said, mentioning several Armenian media outlets.

Another speaker at the press conference – freedom fighter Arthur Yeghiazarian spoke about the need for a strict approach towards such mass media outlets. According to him, in this case it is inappropriate to speak about freedom of speech.

«It is necessary to ban such activities of the media. The state should intervene to prevent propaganda of licentiousness,» he said.
In conclusion, the speakers noted that the indicated field should be regulated by the law and controlled by the public.
