Ter-Petrosian does not speak about nomination

“Some irresponsible people are trying cause a divide within our people. They want to divide our nation into a pro-Russian part and a pro-Western one,” the leader of Armenian National Congress (HAK), member of the Armenian All-National Movement (HHSh) Levon Ter-Petrosian said at the HHSh convention held today.

He asked: Who said that Armenia should be oriented either towards the West or towards Russia.

In Ter-Petrosian’s words, the position of HHSh is clear: the orientation should be temporary: “there should be alliances proceeding from the national interests”.

“We should be neither pro-Western nor pro-Russian. One-way orientation results in one friend and many enemies,” Ter-Petrosian said.

He stressed that neither Russia nor the U.S. can make anyone the President of Armenia; the first Armenian President Ter-Petrosian considered such reasoning as not serious.

At the conclusion of his speech, Ter-Petrosian said that now everyone expects him to announce if he will run for President in the upcoming election or not. «I have applied to all powers: China, the United States, Russia, also to the EU.... I cannot make my announcement before receiving their approval…,” Ter-Petrosian said half in jest, adding that their answer will be known in two days, and he will say if he will run for President or not.
